Phil – Classical Guitarist

    Phil was born in Sydney and discovered the guitar at the age of seven whilst playing in an empty house in Paddington.

    Phil has since studied classical guitar with Phil Skinner, Bill Bower, Greg Pickler, Peter Calvo – jazz guitar with Ike Isaacs, Steve McKenna – Flamenco guitar with Robert Varga, Michael Arrighi and at Paco Penaís Centro Flamenco in Cordoba, Spain with Manolo Franco.

    Phil is a teacher of contemporary and classical guitar at the Australian Institute of Music.

    Bridal entry

    El Nuevo Dia

    Originally from Columbia, this one of the 71 styles that come under Flamenco. This arrangement creates the happy sound of ‘The New Day’.

    Canarios

    An ancient Spanish dance from the Canary Islands. It was written in 1674 for a 5 string guitar. This interpretation gives precedence to the dance with a driving rhythm.

    La Mezquita

    Spanish court music that takes us back to the time of Ferdinand and Isabella. The music tells the story, how in 1492 marked the end of Moslem rule.

    This arrangement of Sevillanas is based on the festive dance dating back to Roman times and is still performed every year during the fairs that are held annually in cities throughout Andalucia.

    Habanera from Carmen

    A simple arrangement for guitar, written by Bizet in 1874, it is the most famous piece from Spanish Opera.

    Concierto De Aranjuez

    Rodrigo wrote this piece while on vacation in Aranjuez near Madrid in 1939.
